Sense of Place: What in the Maryhill?! An Unexpected Museum Turns 100

Wed Feb 10, 2027 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Columbia Arts, 97031

with Amy Behrens

Where can you see 172 miniature mannequins, the royal treasures of Queen Marie of Romania, and more than 80 works by French sculptor Auguste Rodin — all before lunch? Right here in the Gorge at the Maryhill Museum of Art, one of the world’s most eccentric museums. As Maryhill marks its 100th anniversary, director Amy Behrens will talk with Sense of Place host Sarah Fox about its improbable founding, the ongoing evolution of its varied collections, and its unique place in the Gorge.

Amy Behrens
is Executive Director & CEO of Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Washington. In her role, which she has held since 2023, Amy leads the museum, the Stonehenge Memorial Monument, and the historic Maryhill Loops Road, along with over 5,000 acres of ranchlands. "I was drawn to Maryhill Museum of Art because what can be imagined here, alongside the striking rugged beauty of the Columbia Gorge, can be realized nowhere else." She believes in the inherently innovative and resourceful character of rural communities and the importance of access to museums, regardless of location. She lives in The Dalles with her husband and two children.
