UNSEEN is a striking 65-minute documentary from award-winning filmmaker, Navy veteran, and conservationist Chad Brown.
The film follows five military veterans as they take on a grueling 200-mile bikepacking expedition through Oregon’s wilderness. Along the way, they navigate their own invisible wounds of trauma and PTSD while tracing the forgotten footsteps of the Triple Nickels, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, America’s first all-Black smokejumper unit.
During World War II, the Triple Nickels were sent to the Pacific Northwest on a classified domestic mission, parachuting into remote forests to protect Oregon’s forests while being denied the opportunity to serve in combat.
UNSEEN brings these two journeys together in a story about resilience, service, history, and the role the outdoors can play in healing.
Hood River is a fitting place for the final stop of the UNSEEN tour. The Oregon Timber Trail, which stretches more than 600 miles through the state, finishes its route here in the Columbia River Gorge. The screening brings the film’s journey full circle and offers an opportunity for veterans, outdoor enthusiasts, history lovers, and the wider Gorge community to come together around a uniquely Oregon story.
UNSEEN is directed by Chad Brown and supported in part by Travel Oregon and Oregon Film. Brown’s work as a filmmaker, photographer, and advocate has focused on outdoor access, conservation, racial equity, and the experiences of veterans.
